Message from the President
Since the last eNews I have returned from the United States where I had a successful ‘work’ trip. The trip was for the purpose of unveiling a plaque identifying the grave of Jacob Nagle who arrived on the First Fleet in 1788 but who was born, and died, in the United States. While in the United States he fought in the American War of Independence in the Continental Army and was amongst the troops who survived Valley Forge. Despite it bucketing down with rain on the Friday and on the Saturday, the weather was magnificent and we had a goodly number of people present, the speeches were short, and interesting and the event went off very well. Congratulations to the organising committee.

Now that I am back home, I will prepare a response to the letter from the Dept. of Transport about the M2 Noise. CLICK HERE to read the letter from Transport for NSW.  Once the motorway resurfacing has been completed, we should all have our fingers crossed that the noise is abated, as Transport clearly expects. A copy of my response will appear in the next eNews.

Two items of news have been received about local wildlife. The first is that the data collection looking for possible evidence of a platypus or two in our local waterways has now been completed and is being analysed. We will bring this news to you once it has been received. Secondly, I bumped into Michael Bianchino, a former resident of our suburbs, who is undertaking a study of some of our powerful owls – both filming a nest and collecting some of their regurgitated droppings which will be analysed to provide advice on their diet and the possible impact of fox bait poisoning.  I have asked Michael if he would be so kind as to send through any report that might result so that we can pass it on to you.

Work is progressing apace on both the Village Green and the new vet practice in Wongala Crescent. When you are away for a few weeks you notice the progress upon your return. The rain will surely help the native plantings between the new Village Green playground and the railway line.

It was very pleasing to see that two long standing residents of our suburbs, Ray and Diana Kidd, were awarded Australian honours in the King's Birthday announcement. Ray received his award for, in part, his work for the Australian wine industry. But each received an individual honour for generous and long standing support for the National Gallery of Australia and the NSW Art Gallery. While I haven’t asked them, I am sure that they would say that they are humbled to have been honoured alongside such an amazing array of other Australians who have done so much for us, but I add that to benefit our community both locally and as a nation in this way, is something that is truly worthy of such recognition.

Don’t forget that the next performance of the Beecroft Orchestra is coming up at 2.30pm on Sunday 30th of June and I am sure that it will be an afternoon of beautiful music – as were the last few that I have attended.

Elsewhere in this eNews you will see a request to help the Civic Trust plan to celebrate 60 years of our service to the community. If it can be as enjoyable as the Beecroft Ball, where I am reliably told, a great time was had by all, then we will have done wonders.

Westleigh Grant Funding
On Wednesday night at Hornsby Shire Council’s General Meeting the Mayor Philip Ruddock presented a Mayoral Minute on the loss of State Government funding for Westleigh Park.  This matter has been in the news and the Trust believes it is in the community’s interest to be aware of Council’s position. The NBN and Heritage Trees in Beecroft
On Thursday the 20th of May, several Chapman Ave. and Cardinal Ave. residents were alarmed to see the NBN commencing trenching operations very close to a particularly significant and heritage protected Eucalyptus tree outside of a newly constructed home in Cardinal Avenue.  While the home was under construction it was carefully protected with an extensive tree protection zone.

Weeks after the tree protection zone was removed, the NBN arrived and commenced their trenching operations.

A number of residents immediately informed Hornsby Shire Council.
Council, some 14 days later, contacted the concerned residents and informed them that not much could be done or could have been done as the NBN was a Federal body operating under Federal legislation. As such they did not require Council permission.
The Trust believes, a tree of that size, after having its surface roots interfered with to a depth of 600mm, will probably die within 2 to 3 years.

Beecroft Orchestra is ‘AT THE MOVIES’ for term 2 of 2024.
This is the theme for the Beecroft Orchestra Afternoon Concert on Sunday 30 June 2024 at 2:30pm in the new Performance Hall of Cheltenham Girls High School.

This term we also have  a Beecroft Orchestra Community Playing Day on Saturday 15 June 2024 from 2:30pm till 5pm in our rehearsal space at Carlingford High School. Dust off your instrument and come and play with the orchestra or just come and watch. The playing day cost is $10 per player or $20 per family. The repertoire is approx grade 5 level but everyone is welcome to participate in the playing day and to consider joining the orchestra.  Book through the website and you will be sent the music to be played by email a week before the playing day.
